The Town of Athlone

Athlone is quite literally central to the island of Ireland, meaning it’s at the heart of everything that has happened and is happening in the country. It’s the major crossing point of the River Shannon, the largest river on the island and is surrounded by beautiful lakes, gardens and woodland. Every major thread in Irish history has passed through Athlone, whether it be the famous early Christian settlement at nearby Clonmacnoise or the 12th century castle which was the site of some of the country’s most important battles.
